Most of my posts are about Fashion and possibly beauty, but there is another passion I have and it’s FOOD! Meals are a time to relax and fellowship with friends and family. I’ll be the first to say that I don’t actually cook that much, my husband and I single-handedly keep the local taco restaurant in business (we eat there like 3 times a week, it’s a problem 😉 ) When I travel I like to scope out at least one nice restaurant to make a reservation to try the local cuisine. Last weekend I went to Charleston for Fashion Week and in my plans for the trip I went on the restaurant search.
Lunch: Nicks BBQ
Lunch is always a meal I like to just, “stumble upon” rather than make reservations for because I like to shop and explore and I never know what time I will be hungry. On Friday, my sister, friend Jill and I did a lot of shopping on King St. in Charleston (I will have another post on my favorite shops this week). We had done so much shopping we almost forgot to eat until this amazing smell hit us right in the face with Nick’s Barbecue. I am not a huge bbq fan, pork is just not my favorite meat, but in a BBQ place, I knew I had to try it! The menu was full of options other than just pork, there was chicken, beef and tons of veggie options so this place has something for everyone! I went with a combo of beef brisket (this is always my favorite) and did the $2 upcharge for the ribs and man was it worth it!! The beef brisket was so tender and juicy and the amount of ribs I got were unbeliveable and needed no sauce at all, they were perfectly seasoned. Not only was the meat amazing, but the sides… there were so many! I LOVE fried green tomatoes and they are rarely offered as a side so I got them and I had to go for the slaw. Slaw and pork were just meant for each other. Oh and guess what comes with every combo?! Warm cheese biscuits and these tasted like my grandmothers! So, needless to say, if you need a great lunch spot check them out! I have also linked their mouth watering menu here.
Dinner: Hanks Seafood Restaurant
Years ago my good friend told me about an amazing seafood place in Charleston called, Hanks Seafood Restaurant. Hanks is a must-have for dinner in Charleston! You will most likely need a reservation and if you can make it about a week out you should be fine! Hanks is known for their amazing seafood and buttermilk southern fried chicken! Once again, this restaurant has something for even the pickiest eaters. They are famous for their massive seafood towers covered with all the chilled shrimp, crab and lobster you can imagine! When I say these towers are big, they are HUGE and so delectable! I am a huge fan of grilled salmon so I got the roasted salmon with fingerling potatoes, asparagus, grape tomatoes in a grain mustard horseradish vinaigrette and it was so tender and wonderful. However, I have had the buttermilk fried chicken and if you want a real piece of southern fried chicken (like in the movie, “The Help”), this is it! It is a boneless breast lightly battered and fried golden with crunchy pieces (like I love) and is served with nothing other than mashed potatoes and collard greens! Although we had way too much to eat we still went for a dessert to share and agreed on the creamy peanut butter pie. This pie is a peanut butter cream cheese mouse, chocolate ganache and finished off with a graham cracker crust. I always go for anything peanut butter and chocolate combined and this was so amazing!
Brunch: High Cotton (this is a MUST)
Both of my trips to Charleston I have eaten at High Cotton for Sunday Brunch! This is a place you want reservations, but it is so amazing! To start the table off they serve you warm fresh corn bread that is so amazingly buttery and sweet, almost the consistency of a pound cake and totally melts in your mouth! As a starter this past Sunday we went with the donut holes (pictured below).
These mouth watering holes of perfection were covered in a bourbon glaze topped with fresh apples and bacon! This is a combination that totally surprised me and left me wanting more! As my main entree I went for the Eggs Benedict! I am a newbie to this dish after trying my first one in Laguna Beach last month. I usually always liked my eggs fully cooked and scrambled.
Do I even need a caption for this?!?! Oh my gosh! This was soooo yummy! Eggs Benedict is not what I thought it would be because I always imagined it as runny eggs and it totally isn’t its so buttery and warm and amazing! I ordered mine medium so the eggs were partially cooked on the outside. but still had the rich buttery texture. For any of you who think it will be like raw eggs, it literally tastes like butter, not raw eggs. It was served over an english muffin with thin slices of ham and the mixture was melt in your mouth! I chose the home style potatoes with mine although there was also the option of homemade grits. My sister got the farmers market omelette and Jill got the breakfast plate with eggs, bacon, and potatoes and both of theirs were amazing, so you really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. Here is a link to the brunch menu so you can see all of the amazing selections.
So, I’m sorry for starting your day off making you hungry, but I wanted to share some of my favorite eating spots. I always love to hear from “Hollyday” readers, so leave a comment with your favorite spot that I need to try on my next trip! Thank you all so much for stopping by and Happy Tuesday!
